What Causes Acne
by Mike Durand

In a search to find out what causes acne lets take a step back in time.

Acne is essentially a disease of the sebaccous glands; yet there must evidently by some cause affecting the system where by this diseased action of the glands is induced. for it seems certain that the starting point of the acne is the change in the nature of the secretion, so that the oily matter no longer flows out of the gland but remains in a hardened condition.

It is also established by experience that acne can be and is often induced by derangements affecting other parts of the body. There is a well established relation between the diet and the occurrence of acne. Thus in many people a crop of pimples is sure to appear after eating buckwheat cakes or mince pie; in other individuals cheese, nuts, raisins and pastry induce acne. In some cases pimples can be traced directly to the abuse of alcoholic, this is frequently the case in those instances of acne which occur in older people.

The condition of the bowels also seems to have a direct connection with the appearance of acne on the face; many individuals who suffer from pimples are troubled with habitual constipation, and procure relief from the acne only after the bowels are regulated. Sometimes the appearance of pimples is a regular sequel to over indulgence in the pleasures of the table.

It seems from the above statements that diet may play a roll in what causes acne.

It is a curious and familiar fact that acne never makes its appearance before puberty and is most luxuriant during the ten years following this period, and that it subsides spontaneously in early manhood, usually by the thirtieth year.

Acne is a disease of the sebaceous glands, when these glands become stopped up so the material which is secreted in the little sac cannot escape there results an accumulation of this oily material in the sac. This sac is therefore gradually distended, and becomes large enough to make a little elevation on the skin. Meanwhile the oily matter located in the pore of the skin has usually absorbed enough dust and dirt to become black, hence the name black head. In some people these distended sacs remain for a considerable time without undergoing further change; in others the matter accumulates constantly, until finally a considerable lump appears, which is know as a wen. This happens with especial frequency when the sebaccous glands of the scalp become stopped up. But in the majority of cases the pressure of the distended sac on the tissues around it causes an inflammation.

This manifests itself by redness and by swelling; in this way the familiar pimple is developed. Sometimes there occurs nothing more than a red swelling, but in the majority of cases the inflammation proceeds until matter is formed around the distended sebaccous sac, making the pustule which so often disfigures the face.

In all cases success can be hoped for only after persevering use of the remedies, both those for application to the skin and those which are designed to improve the condition of the digestive organs. Cases are found which seem to resist almost all measures of treatment; such individuals have at least the consolation that the affection will yield to time, even if all medicines prove unavailing.

The treatment of acne is one of the most troublesome undertakings which the physician is ever called upon to perform. this difficulty arises doubtless from the fact that it is often impossible to locate the source of the disease. For as has been said the starting point of the affection may be found in derangements of the various digestive organs; while on the other hand the individual gives absolutely no other signs of disease than are manifest on the face. In general it is necessary to secure regular evacuations of the bowels. this may be accomplished in the way indicated while speaking of constipation; the use of a glass or two of mineral water, or of a wine glass full of the liquid citrate of potassium, will be one of the preparatory steps in the treatment of acne.

Lets return to the present and see if we can find what causes acne today.

The exact cause of acne is unknown, but doctors believe it results from several related factors. One important factor is an increase in hormones called androgens (male sex hormones). These increase in both boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum.

The cause of acne is unknown. The process by which a pimple develops is highly intricate. While we do know that a pore collapses on itself and blocks sebum (oil) from escaping, we don't fully understand why this process takes place in one sebaceous gland versus another.

Causes of adult acne and teen acne may include hormones, diet, evolutionary biology, vitamin deficiency, stress, and more. The real explanation may be a complex mix of many of these factors.

Even today it seems that diet may play a roll in what causes acne.

Acne is caused from imbalances and impurities within the body, and that's why you should treat the problem with an internal cleansing treatment that goes right to the source and fights acne before it even begins.

It looks like our search to find what causes acne still continues today, but now we have better means to fight the pimples when they pop up.

Since we don't know what causes acne, maybe our time is better spent finding a tested and effective treatment for acne.

Pregnancy and Acne Treatment
by Michael Usry

Do you ever see all those Clearasil or Oxy 10 commercials with the completely blemish free teenagers smiling broadly and telling you about how their perfect complexions were a result of the use of that product? It doesn't seem like these over-the-counter and massively available acne solutions could be of any threat to anybody, but if you're a pregnant woman, you should be aware of a few things. There are many acne treatments that are available and safe to use during pregnancy, many of them natural and available right in the home. On the other hand, many manufactured products should be avoided during pregnancy.
It should be noted first that some acne during pregnancy is fairly common among women. During the first trimester, as the body prepares itself to provide for two, hormone levels increase and cause a rise in the body's oil production. The result is acne flare-ups. The good news is that this usually clears up by the second trimester as the body begins to plateau in hormone levels.

The two most common ingredients found in the majority of most acne treatments are Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. It has been tested and determined that benzoyl peroxide is safe for women to use during pregnancy. However, it has also been determined that salicylic acid that is taken orally, such as a pill, has been known to cause some birth defects and may complicate pregnancy. Women must be careful when selecting a product to use, as a product that contains benzoyl peroxide will often contain salicylic acid as well.

So what about a topical application of salicylic acid? It has not been proven that it will cause birth defects or pregnancy complications, but as a pregnant woman that knows now that salicylic acid taken orally is potentially harmful, do you really want to run that risk? Some acne treatment products that doctors have recommended pregnant women should avoid are retinoid, oral retinoid, and Accutane. Retinoid is a form of Vitamin A that can cause birth defects in unborn children. There is no evidence that retinoid taken topically is harmful, but again, why run that risk?

For the desperate new mother that is trying to treat her skin, there are a variety of safe and natural ways to fight off acne. Of course, before women begin any new treatment they should consult their physician or obstetrician. Some products that mothers can safely use topically are Echinacea, lavender essential oil, and tea tree oil. But there are also even easier things one can do to control their outbreaks. Keeping your skin clean by washing with soap and rinsing with warm water to rinse off any remaining soap that may stay and cause block-ups or break-outs is one of the easiest things to do for extra care. After your face is washed and rinsed, avoid picking or popping blemishes to prevent scarring. It should also be mentioned that diet plays an important part in controlling acne. A high fruit and vegetable ratio in a woman's diet should be maintained throughout pregnancy to not only help keep acne more clear, but also for the baby's proper growth and development. Apples and blueberries are both rich in antioxidants, making them very good fruits to consume for the prevention of future outbreaks.

There are also a number of "household" treatments available. A mask of warm oatmeal cooked without additional ingredients in it and applied to the face for about 15-20 minutes may begin to clear up blemishes in as little as a few days. A lemon that has been cut in half and put on acne is another possibility. Uncooked natural oatmeal, garlic, olive oil, mashed potatoes, and even warm sugar water are ways to fight blemishes and prevent new ones from forming again. So mothers, if you find yourself going through those frustrating outbreaks during your pregnancy period, have a little patience, try to go natural, eat a healthy diet of low-fat and preservative-free foods, and stay away from all those manufactured products that claim to clear your face up in five days or less.

Acne Scars In Adults
by Ethan Miller

The medical industry is awakening to the fact that looking good is not about self esteem or self image. Today, acne scars can limit every aspect of life from social acceptability to professional success in your job. Many of today's new acne treatments correct damage by taking advantage of the skin's regenerative properties, healing by using the epidermis's ability to renew, grow, and stretch.

In the past acne scars were a pre-adult concern. Now, making use of information learned from the cosmetic industry, dermatologists are learning to use the skin's ability to remain supple and wrinkle free. The same discoveries that enable adults to remain wrinkle free into their forties is used to prevent acnes and reduce scars.

Cosmetics and healthy living enable skin to remained healthy into the forties, it also remains susceptible to acne and acne scars. Now adults suffer from acne into their forties when aging skin looses its elasticity and regenerative powers, increasing the risk of acne scars.

To combat acne and scaring adults must understand acne and its causes.

Acne starts with one lesion: the comedo. This is an enlarged hair follicle plugged with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria.

The original pimple is invisible to the eye. The Comedones remains beneath the skin's surface until the right conditions enable it to grow into the second level: an inflamed lesion.

As the skin produces more oil, bacteria growth accelerates. The surrounding skin becomes inflamed as the white blood cells fight against the infection.

The most important thing to understand is that there is no cure for acne. The best defense is a good preventative program, especially if acne has caused scares in the past, or in adults over twenty five years old.

Adults must also understand how their daily cleansing rituals and eating habits can aggravate acne. The most damaging product is facial soap. Most soap products contain ingredients that agitate the skin, perfumes that block pores, and abrasives that promote instead of prevent acne scars.

If acne scars exist, do not loose hope. There are several successful treatments. Each one deals with a specific type of acne scar.

There are three types of acne scars:

1.Ice-pick scars average 1-2 mm in diameter.

2.Rolling scars are caused by abnormal fibrous bands that distort the surface of the skin.

3.Boxcar scars measure appears similar to post chicken pox scars.

The type of acne scar defines the treatment. Any reputable program starts by preventing the formation of new pimples. A good program will work to improve photodamage in the skin, improving the skin's ability to prevent scars.

Many new plastic surgery techniques battle acne scars. One notable technique is called Collagen Induction Therapy. This technique promises to help people even when other measures fail. This treatment even offers hope to adults who carry pock-marks on their faces, or have severely scared faces from a serious case of acne.
